Thing 25: Maxis Gameloft Ripoff

Got another complaint, feels like this space is becoming a complaints page for telco service already. I removed all the swear words... hehehe :) :

I tried to download a free game from the Maxis WAP page and accidentally ended up paying RM4 for some stupid weekly subscription.

The problem is that it says send "stop gc" to terminate the service.

But the service never gets stopped. (see my jpg file) The &^%$#@ Gameloft will take money every week from my Maxis account.

Send HELP also no use. (see second pic)

Thing 24: Digi Mobile Internet AGAIN!

I didnt really realize that anyone was following this blog until I got this mail:

Dear S,

I am writing to tell you that your data on Digi's mobile internet charges is WRONG!

I signed up for the RM3 daily package for several days, and this is what happened.

Day 1. I was charged RM3 immediately.
Day 2. They charged me automatically at around 7:20AM.
Day 3. Again got charged RM3 automatically around 7:20AM.

Day 4. 1AM I tried to stop the service using *116 at around 1AM. Although I managed to receive a message that says the service was successfully terminated, it STILL CHARGED ME ANOTHER RM3

Day 4. 7:20AM, They charged me AGAIN!! RM3!

What a CHEAT this damn digi mobile internet is! Something stupid must be wrong with their damn systems!!##$%^$%

I have added some pictures from my phone. See for yourself la.

Thing 23: Group Kliks SMS from Maxis

Finally, someone in Malaysia has launched a Group SMS product.

Group SMS is where ordinary folks like us can :

  1. Create a network of friends using Short messaging services
  2. Support unlimited types of handphone models and softwares. (Stuff like WhatsApp comes pretty close but they won't work on cheaper models)
  3. Save battery & money without being perpetually connected to the Internet on our phones

I think Maxis did a good job coming up with this little advertorial video or whatever

And this is where they put it on their portal.. Those colors won't attract anyone to this site.

Guess they meant to say Cliques SMS but Kliks sure had me confused with some online service.

Never mind about that. In principle, the service is pretty handy for ordinary humans with diverse friends that refuse to be iPhone iDiots.

To get started, all you got to do is type "ON" and send it to 28881.

The whole service seems to be fully menu driven so I don't need to remember special keywords.

I found this out when a friend introduced me to a group called "traffic". It crowd sources traffic information. Think it's similar to the Twitter feed but it's cleaner with less "noise".

Here are a few screen captures (I ripped out of my pal's iDiotfone) of what they have been talking about in there:

I circled out "Penguins" as its the general nickname they seem to give Traffic Cops who wear white top & black pant uniforms. Any warning on Penguins are related to roadblocks for speed traps, road tax / alcohol / registration /etc. checks.

Think I'll create a private group for my own pals to arrange our infrequent Futsal sessions.

Oh before I forget, the pricing is fairly cheap at only 99sen per month (noting that Twitter SMS is about RM4/month).

Sending messages costs 5sen an SMS but it can reach hundreds (assuming your group is that big :P)

Receiving is FREE!! (obviously, that's the best part)

I just wish there was some way to mute the service when I don't want that incessant beeping over quiet dinners.

Another failure is that they don't seem to work with Digi. That is a big big mistake!

Anyway, I will try it for a month and will post an update later.

Thing 22: Xhin Fhong BKT in Sungai Way PJ

Yet another 3 layer pork stopover. This is the 3rd time this year.

Quaint little house cum shop located in Sungai Way area (not to far from Ah Sang BKT)

Finding the place takes some effort with most of the one-way roads so please be prepared (i.e. have a printed map or use yr GPS Navigators)

Table selection is crucial here. Pick the wrong one and it'll get pretty warm when you start drinking hot soup along with hot tea.

If you come early in the morning, this is a nice place. The whole family helps out & they are a cheerful bunch.

This is a breakfast & lunch only place. Also, the ingredients normally gets wiped out by 1:45PM but come earlier or you won't get your preferred cuts. (this Tip is clearly for the 3 layer pork addicts)

What I do like about this place is the taste of the meats & not-so-commercialized feel of the place. (in comparison to that BKT giant less than 200 meters away)

Thing 21: Mi Goreng Wars: Indomie vs Ibumie

While the debate rages on about who copied who in the Instant Noodle industry, I decided to find out what's the real difference between these 2 favorites.

First, a simple comparison of the noodles, texture and color doesn't differ much. Both were slightly darker on one side.

Then let's have a look at the spices that come with each, kicking off with Ibumie:
And then, we see an additional packet of dried onions/shallots in the Indomie package:
So what does all that amount to? Again let's look at Ibumie first:

and this is what came with the Indomie pack:

Quite evident, Ibumie seems to have a bit more oil wherelse Indomie is more generous with flavored black sauce. Which clearly shows in the end results below.

Ibumie's migoreng appears shinier thus good for presentation but lighter in color. The faint traces of red chilli powder also makes for a prettier look.

The Indomie noodles appear less glossy, slightly darker. Seen here with the fried onion/shallot garnishings, it does appear more appetizing to the folks who like it dark.

Finally, I tried both and felt that each had its own distinct taste. I must admit I was partial to Indomie due to the additional garnishing which made the noodles a bit more fragrant.

ok ok... you are right... I should have used all this time for a better purpose.... arghh... migoreng wars... what was i thinkin..

Thing 20: Heng Kee BKT

Located in that very first part of PJ, called PJ Old Town.
They only open at night and the crowd can get pretty large in the evenings or weekends.

Whenever I want to avoid sharing a large pot of claypot BKT, this is the place I can order a whole bowl of 3 layer meat all to myself.... even if we arrive late ....

The soup was ok but the meat didn't seem to have had sufficient stewing time with the herbs.

If you are stuck around PJ New town and Old town, I think this is one of the better BKTs in that area.

Thing 19: Tea Memory in Kuchai Lama

Accidentally landed in this restaurant located on the opposite side of the road to that Talipon Steamboat place in Kuchai Lama. It's a bit hidden under a row of trees on an inner road. The signboard can be seen from Kuchai road.

Here are 2 dishes that I prefer.

Hahahaha this is one fattening way to eat vegetables. mmmmmmm..... I like this vegetable dish for its porky bits!

Nyonya Style Steam Red Tilapia. My tip to other patrons: Ask for more sauce.

There's sufficient parking space along the road in the evening.

Thing 18: Fish Head Bee Hoon Noodles in Tom Yam by Ah Kiew

This must be one of the best kept secret hidden somewhere between Seri Kembangan & Cyberjaya. You don't see it on the Internet but all the locals seem to know this place and love it's soup.

Took some colleagues who have worked before in that area to tell us about this place.

Their signature noodles appears to be Fish Head Milk Noodles, Fish Paste Milk Noodles & Seafood Tom Yam.

And they actually let you pick a noodle of your choice from beehoon to yellow egg noodle, hor fun, loh see fun and yee mee.

Surprisingly they also have 2 rice dishes even though it seems to be a noodle house.

Only 1 complaint is that the drinks menu is kind of limited.

Think I will definitely be back for more.

Thing 17: Just Noodles in Kuchai

Decided to grab a quick dinner the other day and found this simple and unassuming shop called Just Noodles in Kuchai. They seem to be specialized in Wantun Noodles with some variety of snacks and the likes.

The food was very reasonable (as low as RM3.50) with a moderate quantity. Definitely a place I would visit again sometime soon.

Highly recommended for those evenings when you had a heavy lunch before and want something simple to finish off the day.

Thing 16: BKT again... Ah Sang Sungei Way

Yes... I'm addicted to Bak kut Teh......

This time round we decided to hit Ah Sang of Sungei Way (between Sunway & Old PJ Town)

Won't tell you guys how to find it coz I'm sure there are plenty of blogs that do.

I just wanted to document the big crowd that seems to fill this place as early as 12:30 pm on a friday. BUT.... this time round, the ingredients were still available right up to 2pm when we left. So maybe we can take our own sweet time getting here... as long as we bring umbrellas while waiting outside in the sun (or rain)

There. Ya see the crowd waiting outside patiently? There's a VIP air conditioned room too... come early and grab that.

There's no denying that this is one of my favourite BKT spots...

In case you really can't be bothered to google the address... stick yr eyes below:

Thing 15: Meat in Claypot

Fancy some Bak Kut Teh around Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya?

Here's an option found somewhere in the courtyard of the Centrepoint complex in Bandar Utama.

Called "Meat in Claypot" this shop serves individual BKT Claypot sets at RM11.80 per pot. You can pick your preferred cuts.

Yau ja kwai (chinese fried bread stick) sells at RM2.

In a gastronomic emergency, this is a decent place for an emergency porky lunch.

Thing 14: Street Art in Petaling Jaya

Spotted this at that Forum 19 Food court near the Rothmans Roundabout.

Some Designer told me that lady must be some art student's lecturer. Ya think?

Thing 13: Ben's at KLCC

Ben's has a new outlet (formerly housed by California Kitchen) in KLCC.

Seems its soo trendy to do minimalism for decor these days.

Feels like the kind of place you can do your power lunches with clients. Might be a bit noisy when the full lunch hour crowd is in. Works fine if you want it to drown out your private conversations.

Hence, its a cool place for a hawt date.

Thing 12: Pin Xiang Chicken Rice

Hidden in a new area of Bukit Serdang, this little corner factory lot serves a chicken rice lunch with your usual options of beansprouts, roast pork, bbq port, vinegar pork trotters.

Other than the roast chicken which was a tad bit too dry and tough to our liking, the roast pork and bbq pork dishes are definitely worth a go.

To top it off, try ordering their coffee.... suited for your average kawkaw fans.

(After passing the Astro building on your right, you will see a new road on the left with a Bukit Serdang signboard, turn left there and head straight in for 300 m. Ya can't miss it.)

Thing 11: Bkt Desa Mamak finally Reopens

Yepz.. for years this has been a convenient place for us Bkt Desa folks to get our dose of moon light and mamak food.

Its now taken over by Nathan's (Jalan Bukit Desa 5, Taman Desa, off Old Klang Road) who serves Banana leaf rice for lunch. Will give u more updates as I try their grub later.

This must be the 3rd proprietor in 5 years and possibly the one who spent the most on decor so far.

Its your average banana leaf. Average taste, average price. Will try more later.

Eh..one other thing.. the new owner tells me that they only plan to open until 12 midnight daily... sigh*

Thing 10: Mobile Prepaid Data Packages from Maxis vs Digi

Recently, Digi announced that they would discontinue the RM5 maximum data charge. This means that users must consciously select a data package before they start surfing on the Digi SIM cards or your data charge will burn a big fat hole in your purse.

The same applies for Hotlink Prepaid from Maxis. To check their packages, dial *100# and reply "7". Daily package currently priced at RM8.

To get the best deals for Digi, dial *116# and pick the package you want. Daily package now is RM3.

If u select the daily package, MAKE SURE u turn it off by midnight or they will automatically charge you for another day after that.

Thing 9: Maxis Pocket Doctor

Been seeing the Maxis Pocket Doctor Ads and I decided to find out what its all about.

this is what i found on the website

I tried to sign up for the WAP service but it didnt seem to work with a nokia handset:
This is what I got when surfing into that site:
B b but.. I AM USING a Maxis card!!! Maybe they're only meant for Apple iPhones eh?

I also tried out the Fitness Tips at RM3.00 a month. Here are some of the tips I received:

"when exercising outdoor, breathe in through your nose, not your mouth. The nasal passages help filter out pollen, pollution and other irritants."

"Studies show that fatness can be reduced by regular physical activity of moderate to vigorous intensity 3 to 5 times a week, for 30 to....."

"Push-ups and bench presses can improve overall upper-body strength."

I received about 9 messages by the 20th day but then the 3 day later renewal message started appearing. So all in all, I reckon each message cost me about 33cent a piece.

Think I'll give this a miss.
